10 Things You Should Know About The Citizenship Interview

10 Things You Should Know About The Citizenship Interview

The path to U.S. citizenship includes an exam to determine your grasp of English as well as a civics test to assess your knowledge of US history and government.

After you submit your N-400 Application to become a citizen of the United States you will be asked to attend a citizenship interview to determine your eligibility for naturalization.

During this step of the naturalization process, a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) officer will conduct a series of tests to assess your ability to speak, read and write English as well as a civics test to determine your understanding of U.S. history and government.

Here are the Top 10 things you should know about the citizenship interview:

  1. Most applicants are required to take both the English tests and the Civics tests, however some may be exempt based on age or time as a green card holder or certain other medical conditions.
  2. The 'English Component' of the naturalization exam comprises three parts; a speaking test, a reading test, and a writing test.
  3. The USCIS officer may ask you some questions about your application, your history, or questions which may seem simple or unimportant, but all of these are used to assess your grasp of the English language.
  4. USCIS will ask you 10 questions from their list of 100 possible civics questions.
  5. Less than half of these questions will be about US history while the rest will be about the Unites States government.
  6. You must answer at least 6 out of 10 of the civics questions correctly.
  7. USCIS will give applicants two opportunities to take the exam, if required.
  8. It is perfectly OK for you to ask the immigration officer to repeat a question or clarify a word or phrase.
  9. There are practice tests provided by USCIS which you can take prior to your interview to help you feel more confident on the day of the real test.
  10. It's not unusual to be nervous about the citizenship interview, however as long as you meet the requirements for naturalization and you have prepared for the interview then the process will be straightforward.

The Ram Law Firm can help you to complete and file your N-400 application to become a naturalized citizen of the United States and also provides clients with support and resources to assist them through the citizenship process and USCIS interview.

Today I received my green card... you guys changed my life!

There is no word enough to thank Ram and his people. I came to him almost two years ago and today I received my green card as expected.

I went to other lawyers before him and he was the only one who really did care about my case.

To live in the U.S without legal documentation is very hard

My wife lived in the U.S for 29 years without legal papers. She has been hiding, scared and already losing hope, until we met Attorney Joseph.

Attorney Joseph worked very hard on her asylum case and deportation proceedings, and my wife was granted permanent residency in just two court hearings.

-
Severino

Insightful but honest - this is absolutely crucial when it comes to immigration needs

Amazing service! Ram is insightful but honest - he won't water down any information for the sake of comfort, but will tell you the facts straight.

My wife and I were well prepared for our interview thanks to Ram and his team.

My case was extremely difficult and a waiver was needed to get an approval.
