There are a number of ways to obtain a green card through marriage, and not all of them require marrying an existing citizen of the United States.

Green card holders are granted permanent resident status in the United States for a limited time or until they decide to apply for U.S. citizenship.

Acquiring a green card through marriage allows the spouse of a U.S. Citizen or green card holder to not only live but also work anywhere in the United States.

The most common paths for a non US-citizen to legally live and work in the United States through marriage are:

  • Applying for permanent residency on the basis of an existing marriage
  • Marrying a United States citizen
  • Marrying a permanent resident of the United States
  • Obtaining a K-1 fiancé(e) visa

The process involves establishing the marriage relationship by initially notifying the US government, applying for a green card and finally attending an interview.
